World no. 9 Collin Morikawa admits his game is still being affected by a back injury ahead of the Travelers Championship.
The American has struggled with the problem since March when he hurt his lower back while taking a practice swing on the 2nd hole at the Players Championship.
Morikawa, who was forced to withdraw from the tournament at TPC Sawgrass, missed the Valspar Championship, the Houston Open and the Texas Open before making his return at the Masters.
The 29-year-old managed a T7 finish at Augusta despite suffering from discomfort and performed even better at the RBC Heritage the following week after securing a T4.
Morikawa didn’t have a great time at the Cadillac Championship (T62) and the PGA Championship (T55) before he skipped the Memorial Tournament to welcome the birth of his first child.
The two-time major winner featured in the US Open and shot the second-lowest round of the week on day two (65) before going on to finish T17, but admits he’s still not completely comfortable with his swing.
“It’s still a little uncomfortable,” Morikawa said. “I can’t hit every shot that I want to hit. Usually, my go-to shot with right-to-left wind with an iron would be to cut something up, know how it’s going to spin, and just play that shot. I can’t quite cut it as much as I want.
“Thankfully, the greens are soft enough right now where I don’t have to hit the high spinner, but I’m able to hit enough shots. I think I proved it to myself today that I have enough tools to go out and play well.”
