2025-26 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 29
Athletic Bilbao v Real Betis
Estadio San Mames
Bilbao, Spain
Sunday, 22 March 2026
Kick-off is at 19h30
Real Betis will be desperate to snap a four-match winless run in La Liga when they make the long journey to the north of Spain for a clash with Athletic Bilbao at San Mames on Sunday, March 22.
El Glorioso have seen their UEFA Champions League hopes slowly fade away after picking up just 12 points out of a possible 21 since the start of February.
Their last win came against Real Mallorca (2-1) on February 15, and a 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo on March 15 left Manuel Pellegrini’s side 11 points behind Villarreal in fifth place.
That disappointing run that also put their Europa League qualification in danger as Betis are only three points clear of Celta, while Real Sociedad have emerged as contenders a further three points back.

The Lions have just the league to focus on now after being dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Erreala on March 3, having failed to progress to the UEFA Champions League knockout stages.
Ernesto Valverde’s side haven’t won more than three consecutive games this season, and they’ve not managed to collect any points this month.
A 3-0 defeat to Girona on March 14 extended their winless sequence to three matches and sees Athletic way down to 10th position, 20 points outside the top four.

Valverde pulled no punches after the poor result at Girona, admitting his team was made to pay once more for starting slowly, while they’re not creating nearly enough chances.
“Our performance was lacklustre. Our opponents have often been the better side at the start of matches, especially away from home,” he said.
‘We’re struggling. It’s a real blow for us, given how much we were looking forward to this match. Our attacking numbers aren’t good this season. It’s not enough to meet the targets we set ourselves.
“We’re a team that needs to create a lot of chances to score goals, and we’re converting fewer of them this year. We’re lacking quality, energy, and determination.
“We’re feeling the strain of the season and failing to meet expectations. With 10 La Liga matches remaining, we have to face up to it.”
