Following one of Alex Marquez’s most impressive races this season last time out, the Gresini Racing rider will once again eye a podium finish when he takes to the Austrian MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring this coming weekend.
As the younger brother of reigning MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez, Alex finished in second spot at the San Marino MotoGP on Sunday, just 0+657s behind his sibling.
Marquez started the race in ninth following two crashes in qualifying and eventually reached the podium after tense battles alongside his teammate Fermin Aldeguer and Pedro Acosta.
As it stands, Marquez occupies eighth position on the Riders’ standings with 153 points and one win to his name. His second-place finish at San Marino completed just his second podium of the campaign.
Speaking after his San Marino MotoGP run, Marquez lauded his older brother by expressing that he ‘played around’ with his competitors at the Misano World Circuit.
“I don’t want to get into that discussion. I never really had the chance to attack,” Marquez said.
“He managed the situation very well. When I passed Martin, I had a bit of an advantage and managed to get closer, but then he pulled away again. That one-tenth advantage he had, and that Bezzecchi would also have had if he had not crashed, was exactly the margin that allows you to play around a little on this track, and he knew it.
“He is an experienced rider, he knows that when you get close the front tyre starts to suffer, which is why he played around with us a bit.”
