Atletico Madrid will look to bounce back from their midweek European heartbreak when they host Celta Vigo for a La Liga clash at the Metropolitano Stadium on the evening of Saturday 9 May 2026, kick-off at 18:30 CAT.
Atletico exited the UEFA Champions League at the semifinals stage on Tuesday with a 0-1 (1-2 on aggregate) defeat at the hands of Arsenal, ending their hopes of a first top-tier European prize.
All that is left for Los Rojiblancos is to secure a 14th successive top-four finish to ensure they return to the UCL next term – something they should have no trouble with, given that they have won 14 of their last 17 home La Liga games.
“I feel calm, I feel peaceful. We weren’t clinical enough with the situations we were in. We improved in the second-half. There were things that could’ve gone our way but they didn’t,” said Atletico manager Diego Simeone.
“We gave it our all and now we have to accept the place that we are in. Thanks to our supporters and players I feel proud to be where we are right now.”
Celta are currently on track for a second consecutive European campaign, and with Spain in the running for a fifth UCL spot, they can even maintain a faint flicker of hope of beating Betis to that position after ending a three-game La Liga losing streak by overcoming Elche 3-1 last weekend.
In head-to-head stats, Atletico and Celta have met in 132 matches across all competitions. Los Rojiblancos have claimed 80 wins compared to 27 for Os Celestes, while 25 games have been drawn.
The teams last met in La Liga in October 2025, drawing 1-1 at the Balaidos Municipal Stadium thanks to an own goal from Carl Starfelt and leveller by Iago Aspas.
