2026/27 Serie A
Matchday 1
Genoa vs Napoli
Luigi Ferraris Stadium, Genoa
Saturday 22 August, 20:45
Napoli will look for a fast start to the 2026/27 Serie A season when they face hosts Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium on the evening of Saturday 22 August.
Form and team news
Genoa finished in 16th place in Serie A last, seven points clear of the relegation zone, but still too close to danger for coach Daniele De Rossi, who will be under pressure to oversee an improvement in the new campaign.
The Grifone have boosted their squad with the additions of Lorenzo Colombo, David Puczka, Djibril Sow, Franz-Ethan Meichtry, Samuel Wiafe, Hamed Traore and more, while the major outgoing was the sale of striker Jeff Ekhator to Juventus.
Napoli came home in second place in Serie A last season, as they were unable to defend the title they won in 2024/25. Coach Antonio Conte left the club at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, and has been replaced by former Juventus and AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri.
The Partenopei have boosted their squad with the additions of Miguel Gutierrez, Alisson Santos and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (as well as Rasmus Hojlund making his loan permanent), while the major departures are Giovanni Simeone, Alessandro Zanoli and Romelu Lukaku.
Quotes
Napoli coach Massimiliano Allegri: “I am inheriting a squad that is certainly accustomed to hard work. Conte has proven his worth throughout his career. I’m lucky, this is actually the second time I’ve inherited Antonio’s team – let’s hope it’s a good omen.
“It will be important to work with seriousness and professionalism, and above all to lay the groundwork for reaching March – as I always say that’s when seasons are decided – still in contention for all our objectives: Serie A, the Champions League, the Italian Cup.”
Head-to-head
Napoli and Genoa have met in 129 matches dating back as far as 1926. The Partenopei have claimed 50 wins compared to 36 for the Grifone, while 43 games have been drawn.
Napoli completed a league ‘double’ over Genoa in Serie A last season, winning 2-1 in Naples in October 2025 and 3-2 in the return game in Genoa.
