Newcastle United will look to catch Liverpool cold at the start of the new Premier League season, as the teams clash in a Matchday 1 fixture set for St James Park on the late afternoon of Sunday 23 August.

Form and team news

Newcastle finished in 12th place last season, as they endured a trying campaign under Eddie Howe. The English coach recently parted ways with the club, allowing young German Matthias Jaissle to take the reins.

The new tactician has a tough task on his hands, especially as the Magpies have lost key men in the transfer market: Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have all been sold, with further departures possible before the end of the window. United have brought in the likes of Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Sean Steur amd Lukas Hornicek.

Liverpool made a mess of their Premier League title defence last season and only came home in fifth place – just enough to ensure they remained in the Champions League, but not sufficient for coach Arne Slot to remain in charge. He has been replaced by Andoni Iraola, who did amazing work at Bournemouth, notably taking the Cherries to their first ever European qualification.

The Spanish tactician has seen Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo arrive, but the team has lost stalwarts in Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson.

Quotes

Newcastle coach Matthias Jaissle: “I am incredibly excited about the future. I fully and unreservedly believe in this project, the ambition and the direction the club is taking. There is a clear vision, strong leadership and an exceptional platform to build on.”

Head-to-head

Newcastle and Liverpool have met in 187 matches, dating back as far as 1898. The Reds have claimed 93 wins compared to 50 for the Magpies, while 44 games have been drawn.

The teams’ league meetings last season saw Liverpool complete a league ‘double’ with a 3-2 win at St James Park in August 2025, and a 4-1 triumph at Anfield in January 2026.
