Switzerland have secured a Round of 16 berth at the 2026 World Cup after they eased past Algeria 2-0 at BC Place Vancouver on Friday.
It is the Rossocrociati’s first World Cup knockout stage win since the 1930s, with the result secured by goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye. They will go on to face Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver in the final Round of 16 match next Tuesday.
Algeria started brightly, but it was Switzerland who claimed an early lead. A superb run down the left flank from Johan Manzambi ended with a cut-back from the by-line which Breel Embolo steered home at close range for 1-0 in the 11th minute.
The Swiss then had regular dangerous forays into the Algerian penalty area, creating a couple of half chances for the likes of Denis Zakaria and Remo Freuler, while Algeria’s most notable effort was a low shot from Fares Chaibi in the 43rd minute that was easily saved by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
The Rossocrociati doubled their lead within 60 seconds of the restart in the second half, as Dan Ndoye picked up a poor clearance on the edge of the box before steering a shot into the bottom corner for 2-0.
Switzerland controlled proceedings through the remainder of the match and should have extended their lead in the 81st minute when Zakaria’s square ball across the face of goal found Fabian Rieder, but he only managed to direct a shot back towards goalkeeper Luca Zidane rather than into the gaping net.
