Carlos Alcaraz vs Ben Shelton
United States
Tuesday, 8 September
Reigning US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz made a welcome return to action after suffering a wrist injury four months ago and will now set his sights on Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
The Spaniard wowed his adoring fans with an impressive win over 20th seed Tommy Paul in the Round of 16 where he recorded a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 straight set sweep at the Flushing Meadows on Sunday.
After dropping only one set in the match, Alcaraz subsequently set up a quarter-final clash against the eighth-seeded Shelton, who secured a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 win over Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas en-route to the final eight.
Alcaraz thus continued his impressive return to the game and extended his win streak to 18 matches in Grand Slam tournaments.
Speaking after his latest win, Alcaraz expressed that he has been recovering well behind the scenes and that he attempted to impose himself on his opponent in New York.
“I played my game. I tried to put my style on today’s match,” Alcaraz said.
“I’ve been really focused on the recovery with my team, with myself, doing the right things off the court trying to be healthy and in good shape for the next round.
“I’m really happy with the performance today.”
