2026/27 La Liga
Matchday 1
Sevilla v Rayo Vallecano
Saturday 15 August, 21:30
Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium
Sevilla will chase a fast start to the 2026/27 La Liga season when they welcome Rayo Vallecano to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Saturday 15 August, kick-off at 21:30.
Form and team news
Sevilla finished 13th in La Liga last season, just one point above the relegation zone. Coach Luis Garcia Plaza took over in March 2026 and helped the club avoid the drop, and he will be hopeful of taking Los Nervionenses higher up the log this time around.
Los Nervionenses have boosted their squad with the likes of Gabriel Suazo, Fran Gonzalez and Julio Diaz, while the major departures have been Juanlu Sanchez (to Bournemouth) and Akor Adams (to Venezia).
Rayo, meanwhile, came home in eighth place in La Liga last season, missing out on European qualification by just one point. Coach Benat San Jose takes over the reins from Inigo Perez, who stepped down despite taking Los Franjirrojos to the final of the UEFA Conference League final (where they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace).
Rayo’s major transfer activity has been restricted to loaning defender Marash Kumbulla from Roma, and selling left-back Pep Chavarria to Chelsea.
What the teams are saying
Sevilla coach Luis Garcia Plaza on what he hopes for this season: “The first three matches are always the most difficult. We need players up front. It’s a balancing act, yes, but we want to make a major change to the team—we don’t want to be fighting to avoid relegation at the end. We want a different type of player, a different way of doing things.”
Head-to-head
In head-to-head stats, Sevilla and Rayo have met in 56 matches, dating back as far as 1968. Los Nervionenses have claimed 32 wins compared to 11 for Los Franjirrojos, while 13 games have been drawn.
Sevilla took four points off Rayo last season, winning 1-0 away in September 2025 and drawing 1-1 at home in the return game in March 2026.
