Real Betis have a perfect opportunity to cement fifth place in La Liga when they welcome basement dwellers Real Oviedo to La Cartuja on Sunday, May 3.

El Glorioso have struggled for consistency in the last two months, winning just one of their eight games since the start of March to all but end their hopes of a top-four finish.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have a six-point cushion to Getafe (6th) and Celta Vigo (7th) and they were unfortunate not to come away with victory against Real Madrid on April 24.

Betis created by far the better chances in Seville, but they found Andriy Lunin in stellar form as the goalkeeper ensured Los Blancos held onto their 1-0 lead until stoppage time when Hector Bellerin eventually equalised to clinch a 1-1 draw.

Los Azules look destined to make swift return to the Segunda Division despite winning three of their last six matches.

Guillermo Almada’s side had embarked on a three-game unbeaten run at the start of April to give them hope, but results elsewhere didn’t go their way.

A 2-1 defeat to Elche on April 26 left Oviedo firmly rooted to the foot of the table, five points behind 19th-placed Levante and a further two adrift of safety.

Bellerin registered only his second goal of the campaign against Real and admitted he doesn’t shoot from range often, but gambled on this occasion as the ball went through a sea of legs into the back of the net.

“In situations like this, there’s not much to think about. I’m not one for shooting from distance; I look for the cross. Amidst all the legs, it went in,” he told DAZN about his goal.

“I think we were in control for most of the match and deserved more than just a point. Not getting the win feels unfair to me.

“They’re a brilliant team, but we had plenty of shots on goal. The goalkeeper saved them all. We’re satisfied because it’s a good result.”
