World No. 5 Tommy Fleetwood admits he needs to work on areas of his game as he heads to the RBC Heritage on the back of a “dreadful” Masters.
The Brit has produced some promising displays this year, but he’s yet to add to his maiden PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship in August 25.
Fleetwood achieved four top 10s going into the first major of the season, with a T4 at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am his best result.
But the 35-year-old struggled with his approach play and short game at Augusta, particularly in the final round as he made four bogeys and one double-bogey to finish with a 76.
Fleetwood placed T33 and he intends to use his poor weekend as motivation to improve as the year progresses.
“Just would look at it as motivation for things that need to be better. I was a long way from being good enough to contend this weekend,” Fleetwood said.
“I hit the ball – I struck the ball well for a lot of that 36 holes, but too many mistakes. Hit it in the wrong place too many times. Short game was awful and didn’t putt the way I did in the first two rounds.
“Just take from it there’s stuff that I need to work on… My scoring this weekend was dreadful. Like I say, I hit the ball well for a lot of it. My long game wasn’t the problem at all.
“You’re going to hit bad shots at some point. I hit a handful of bad shots. But some errors hitting it in the wrong spots, and then yeah, just didn’t have it at all.”
